Steven Covey, in his book The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People, directs people to “start with the end in mind.”There is a simple reason: If we do not know where we are going, any road will take us there.

 

Developing a business and marketing strategy is a key element of building and growing any successful business. Goals lead to strategies that lead to tactics. Without tactics, often an organization can become stifled by changing or conflicting priorities, a lack of focus, vague expectations, and poor decision making.

 

A business or marketing strategy should contain clear and measurable objectives, reflect the direction and vision of the leadership, have support of the management, and be updated regularly to measure progress and guide decisions. Strategic Planning Facilitation

Mark Abel is an experienced business and strategic planning facilitator for both large and small business.  Each strategic planning engagement will be tailored to the specific needs of the customer.  These sessions are often held during the year-end planning cycle for the upcoming year.  An example of an approach is presented below. 

 

Day One.  The Planning Session will be a hands-on brainstorming session to gather ideas and inputs about where the company is today (culture, value, solutions, clients) and where it could be in the future (3 years). Discussion will also include brainstorming of next year’s top issues and priorities.  These insights will be used to develop a 3 year vision and supporting objectives for the coming 12 month period.

 

Day Two.  The Planning Session will include a company-wide business operations assessment of current year achievements and next year objectives.   We will further discuss business development process and priorities.  After lunch, we will introduce a three year vision (strategic window), and review 12-month objectives to make progress toward that vision.  Objectives will be provided in a final deliverable that defines measurements/targets, assigns a responsible lead, and identifies actions with due dates.  These elements create accountability to measure progress over the coming year.
